Amir Shanan

Described as a mix of philosopher, ethicist, counselor and veterinarian, Dr. Shanan has been in private practice in Chicago since receiving his DVM from Michigan State University in 1985. He is the owner of Compassionate Veterinary Hospice, serving geriatric and seriously ill companion animals and their caregivers since 1995.

Dr. Shanan founded the International Association for Animal hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC) in 2009, served as its first president and then as its Treasurer until 2015. He was Chairperson of the task force that authored the IAAHPC Guidelines for Recommended Practices in Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Care; Chairperson of the task force that developed the IAAHPC Certification Program; Co-chair of the expert panel that authored the AAHA/IAAHPC End of Life Care for Dogs and Cats Practice guidelines; and the main editor of the book Hospice and Palliative Care for companion Animals: Principles and Practice.
